Do I have to carry proof of insurance?

Absolutely. You must have proof of insurance in your immediate possession any time you drive a motor vehicle. Failure to provide proof of insurance in an auto accident with bodily injury or property damage exceeding $501 can result in suspension of your driver's license.

What are the Alaska minimum auto liability limits?

Alaska requires you to have the minimum auto insurance liability limits of 50/100/50 which means you need $50,000 per person of bodily injury liability, $100,000 of bodily injury insurance per accident, and $50,000 of property damage liability coverage.

Does Alaska require SR-22 filings?

Yes! If you have your drivers license suspended, you are required to file an SR-22 with the State of Alaska. An SR-22 provides proof of financial responsibility and must be filed with the Division of Motor Vehicles for three years after an accident occurs in which the driver was uninsured. Your car insurance company will often file the SR-22 for you.

What is Civil Rule 82?

If you are involved in an auto accident and are sued, Civil Rule 82 can award partial attorney's fees to a prevailing party in a lawsuit. This means that if a judgement is rendered against you and it exceeds the liability limit of your car insurance, you may be responsible for paying part of the attorney's fees and expenses awarded by the court.
